A SERIES OF SHOP SESSIONS AT SCHUMANN'S

Bob Schuman (HOST) & Charlie Sides (HELPER) are planning a Series of Shop Sessions to build several large gas model airplanes using a semi-production line approach. The intent of these builds is to impart to the attendees:

bullet

A working knowledge of gas engine conversions

bullet

Hand's on learning of how to build a kit from scratch

bullet

Experience building a kit from full scale plans

bullet

Learn how to use heat shrink covering material for finishing and/or repair

The final product of these session will be a large gas model airplane, ready to fly with the capability to be an easy flyer, but also capable of being set up for full aerobatics.

Benefits to be acquired from these build sessions are:

bullet

Being self sufficient in maintaining and/or repairing your models

bullet

Confidence in your ability to take on future model building

bullet

Better understanding of gas engines & how to convert for RC use

bullet

Enjoy the pleasures of flying a big model --"Bigger is Better"

bullet

Helps reduce Schumann's inventory of wood stock & whacker engines

bullet

It's going to be a lot of fun.

These Sessions are planned to be once a week in Bob shop located just off Tangerine Blvd. a couple of miles past La Canada. Since we are all HH residents, we should be able to car pool to the sessions. Starting at 9:00 AM and working (playing) till 3:30 every Monday should allow us to accomplish significant work during each session. We'll probably break and go for a fast food lunch - or brown bag it - or order in - or take turns being the lunch runner/go getter. The model that has been selected for the build is the "STINGRAY 120" by Balsa USA. You can see this plane on the Bay Hobbies web site at: "www.bayhobby.com" This model is a good match for the Ryobi cc

conversion engine we've selected for this project.

There will be Five major phases to this building project after the introductory Phase:

First Phase will be the conversion of the Ryobi Weed Whacker Engines.

bullet

Perform actual conversion and reassembly for RC flight

bullet

Test run engine and verify performance

Second Phase will be the making of the kits;

bullet

Making the needed templates

bullet

Cutting the various parts

bullet

Bending the landing gear

Phase Three will be the building of the airplane major structural components:

bullet

Building the wing & tail structure

bullet

Building the fuselage structure

bullet

Assembly and fit of the major component structures

Phase Four will be the covering and finish of the model components:

bullet

Doing the "putzy" covering items

bullet

Covering the wing, ailerons, and elevator & rudder.

bullet

Covering the Fuselage, horizontal & vertical.

Phase Five is Final Assembly and balance:

bullet

Assemble all major components & glue hinges

bullet

Install engine, tank & tubing

bullet

Install all controls & servos

bullet

Balance aircraft horizontal & vertical

bullet

Set-up all throws and computer functions

We estimate the entire project will take 7 or 8 sessions By starting in January

We're done in March

Bob will furnish all the needed Balsa, Plywood, Hardwood, and Dowels:

Bob will furnish the Ryobi 31cc engines for conversion to RC:

bullet

Machined Prop Hub included

bullet

Modified stock muffler included

bullet

Carburetor Spacer included

bullet

A nice cast motor mount from Jag Engines OR

bullet

Do-it yourself AL strap/w stand-offs type motor mount

The items shown on the attachment will need to be provided from your existing stock OR acquired from a Local Hobby Shop and/or order from Tower.

This write-up is intended to inform you of what you are committing to in terms of time and cost should you decide to join us in this series of building sessions. It is our opinion that you will gain usable knowledge, have fun and walk away with an excellent model at a reasonable cost.
